In Gray Matter you will be helping two characters - Samantha Everett and David Styles - in solving a mystery of strange, almost paranormal activities. Both of them keep diaries, but in fact all they contain is a record of the dialogues - it can be found in the inventory, on the bar in the upper part of the screen.

Manipulating items looks a bit differently than in most point & click games. Clicking an item with the LMB in the inventory will result in a comment referring to it or a zoom in case of fragments of puzzles and documents. The latter ones can be magnified with the mouse wheel. To combine two items, you have to click one of them with RMB in the inventory - it will land in a symbolic hand (upper right corner of the screen) - and afterwards LMB on the other possessed or external item.

During the game it's worth to check your progress (P or a special icon in the left corner of the inventory) on a special screen which will display which missions are still ahead of your character and to what extent are they completed. Apart from missions needed to complete a given chapter, there are also additional activities, the completion of which is optional.

There is an in-game map (M or a special icon in the left corner of the inventory), which apart from letting you move quickly (without having to move between location) will also give you important information. The colour in which the name of a given location is written indicates if there are any main missions left to complete (golden letters), bonus missions left (silver letters) or if there's nothing there for you to look for (gray letters).

A special screen is used for planning magic tricks, on which you mark the moves which Sam should make. You can also have a look at her magic book (on the inventory bar) by pressing LMB (it will appear on the left) to check if you're doing everything in the right order.

Traditionally, active points are accessible by pressing space, double pressing LMB speeds up the character's movement and a single click scrolls the dialogues.

The construction of the guide is adjusted to the mission received by the characters. Most of them can be completed at any order and at the same time, but sometimes you have to complete a certain task before you can move to the next one. If you can't perform one of the actions described in the guide, make sure you've completed all the previous ones.

Red has been used for marking items, blue for premium actions and bold marks solutions and important information.

Gray Matter is the first adventure game by renowned author Jane Jensen since the release of Gabriel Knight 3: the story mixes eerie goings-on with supernatural events in best Jensen-style. Neurobiologist Dr. David Styles is one of the game`s central characters: since losing his wife in a horrible accident some several years ago, he has become a recluse, seldom leaving Dread Hill House, his English country estate.
When student and part-time street performer Samantha Everett shows up at his doorstep, she unexpectedly becomes his assistant. Hailing from America, she has been travelling through most of Europe the last couple years. Her first task: finding six test subjects at Oxford University for one of Styles` experiments. The experiment starts off innocently enough, but then inexplicable incidents start mounting.
Players control both Dr. David Styles and Samantha Everett in their bid to uncover the secrets and find out the truth. Gray Matter tackles questions concerning the nature of reality and the power of the human mind in constructing the world we take for granted.

Gray Matter is a point-and-click adventure game designed by Jane Jensen, creator of the Sierra EntertainmentGabriel Knight series. The game was developed by Wizarbox and published by dtp entertainment for Microsoft Windows and Xbox 360. It was released in November 2010 in Continental Europe and in English-speaking territories in 2011.

The game takes place in Oxford and, to a lesser extent, in London. It follows the story of Samantha Everett, a street performer and magician, and Professor David Styles, an acclaimed and mysterious neurobiologist.

Featuring single player, multiplayer and four-player cooperative modes, Dying Light more than fills your need for a zombie apocalypse shooter. One more thing While this a demanding game, it always worked great, even on our lower end test machine. Testing Conditions: We tested the game using the Medium settings, all effects set to On and 1280×800 resolution:Can your Mac run it? Dying Light is a demanding game. Stay away from it unless you have at least a recent MacBook Pro.Any bugs you should be aware of? Testing Dying Light was a real treat. The size of the game world, the quantity of zombies, buildings, and objects, it’s not surprising this game requires some decent horsepower to run. Shooter games for mac pro. That said, you’ll still want a fairly hearty Mac to fully enjoy it.Dying Light benchmark results (in FPS).

Gameplay[edit]

The game features many real world locations. Photo of Carfax Tower (upper) compared to the in-game representation (lower).

The game is played entirely with the mouse in the case of the PC version (point-and-click). The cursor is contextual, meaning that it will change automatically to actions such as 'Talk to..', 'Pick up..', and so on, depending on the object (and state of the object) it is hovering over at the time. Item labels may be toggled at any time.

The game is divided into eight chapters (whereas the first and third Gabriel Knight games [the second game, The Beast Within, has a structure similar to Gray Matter] were divided into 'days'). Each chapter requires completion of certain objectives. Bonus objectives are also available for every chapter but are not required to advance the main story.

Puzzles include riddles, word games, visual puzzles, mazes, and magic tricks. As an aspiring magician, Sam often adapts tricks out of her magician's handbook to the situation at hand. The tricks vary from creating misdirection to using gimmicks or taking or planting objects through sleight of hand. If each required step is not performed correctly, the player has the opportunity to redo the trick from the last correct step.

The player controls Dr. David Styles in chapters 3,5 and 7, and Samantha Everett in the rest.

Plot[edit]

The opening scene of the game depicts Sam riding her motorcycle in the rain in the countryside while traveling to London, and accidentally being redirected to Oxford because of a broken street sign. Her bike breaks down, forcing her to take shelter in Dread Hill, a nearby mansion where David resides. She poses as an Oxford student responding to Styles' request for a research assistant.

Eventually, Sam is ordered to recruit six students as test subjects for David's research. Through clever manipulation and magic tricks, Sam manages to find four students willing to volunteer for the experiment. The professor recalls her to Dread Hill, letting her know that he found a fifth candidate and making Sam herself the sixth.

As the game progresses, Sam learns about the professor's past, his research on the paranormal, the prestigious members-only Daedalus magic club, a series of bizarre events that take place at Oxford University, and how these elements are connected.

Development and release[edit]

Gray Matter was originally announced in 2003 as Project Jane-J and slated for release in 2004.[2] The game was put on hold in 2004[3] and later revived by a German publisher Anaconda in 2006 for release in 2007[4] and then 2008.[5] In 2008, development was moved from Hungarian Tonuzaba to French Wizarbox, delaying the game further.[6] The game was released in Germany on November 12, 2010[7] and in Spain on November 19, 2010,[8] and was released in North America on February 22, 2011, in Europe on February 25, 2011 and in Australia on March 3, 2011.[9] The German and Spanish language releases include complete English localization.

A Wii version of the game was tentatively planned but not produced.[10]

The collector's edition includes a metal game box, a CD with the game soundtrack (score and songs by Robert Holmes), a deck with Gray Matter playing cards, 5 exclusive postcards with artwork from the game, and a double-sided poster.[11] This edition is available only in German.

Reception[edit]

Reception by the gaming press to the English language release has been mixed. PC version received an aggregated score of 72 on Metacritic and 73.67% on GameRankings.[12][13] Xbox 360 version received an aggregated score of 66.20% on GameRankings.[14] Zen Review commented that, 'While it does pale in comparison to what was one of the pinnacle[s] of adventure gaming [Gabriel Knight], for being such a refined product of well-told story and carefully crafted multimedia experience, it has been well worth the decade-long wait for the fans of Jensen's work.'[15] Adventure Classic Gaming stated that, 'for the rest of gamers who opt to evaluate this game on its own merits, Gray Matter is a game that can easily measure up against the best of what the genre can offer. Gray Matter succeeds not because of its pedigree but because of what it can deliver.'[16] Most of the criticisms of the game are directed at the quality of the cut scenes, which are considered out of keeping with the quality of the rendered graphics. Official Xbox Magazine UK gave the game an unfavorable review, criticizing the clunky interference and 'patronizing' depiction of England.[citation needed]The A.V. Club gave it an A- rating, praising the puzzles and writing and calling it 'the best traditional adventure game in a decade.'[17]
