  1. While the d-pad is a bit too big for its own good, you'll very quickly become comfortable moving around in games, as your left thumb would normally control the analog stick on a gamepad.
  2. I've owned a Gravis X-terminator since it was released, and find it a terrific gaming joystick. Programming it for different games is simple after a bit of reading. In all the years I've owned it, it has never given me any problems. Unfortunately the Gravis Xperience control panel doesn't seem to work with windows 7.

Gravis Joysticks

Advanced Gravis Computer Technology was originally a Canadian company which produced some of the most advanced DA15 joysticks of it's time. The company had a very good reputation for innovation and is credited for the first GamePad, as well as some of the best flight sticks ever produced. The company was sold in 1999 to Kensington.

Used by Joystick Rehab as a 'reference' model in its DA15 to USB adapter reviews, this late-model Gravis joystick was perhaps one of the best analog DA15 joysticks ever produced. Although Gravis was bought out by Kensington in 1999, this Joystick continued to be sold for a significant length of time. It is not unheard of to discover new in the box, shrink-wrapped versions of this joystick on Ebay. Some might frown at this joystick's lack of POV hat, but the fact that it is such a simple 3-Axis, 4 Button joystick is exactly why it is easy to adapt to USB which makes it in some respects more useful than it's digital counterpart. Kensington has long discontinued support for this joystick, but a google search has revealed that Kensington's FTP website still archives driver software for this joystick with Windows XP, admittedly obsolete and unnecessary in the Windows 7 / 8 era.

RECOMMENDED ADAPTATION: Mayflash USB to GamePort Adapter (Mode 'W'), with no modification.

The 'big brother' of the Gravis Blackhawk, the even larger and more powerful Gravis Firebird 2 boasts 3-axis, 13 buttons, and POV hat, making it an ideal candidate for even the most modern and demanding games. Adapting this Joystick to Windows 7 presented a major but workable challenge for Joystick Rehab's founder. Like the Gravis Blackhawk, it is sold on Ebay for pennies compared to it's original price and it's feature set is still difficult to beat. If you are willing to be a little resourceful and remember your skills with MS-DOS, this might be a project for you.

RECOMMENDED ADAPTAION: Mayflash USB to Gameport Adapter (Mode 'W'). Joystick must be programmed using MS-DOS Software.
ALTERNATIVE ADAPTATION: Rockfire USB to Gameport Adapter (Mode 2). Joystick must be programmed using MS-DOS Software

A later revision of the Gravis Blackhawk produced shortly after the company was bought by Kensington, the Blackhawk Digital was nearly identical to it's analog counterpart, except that it included a POV hat, which required the use of signal mixing and hence, proprietary drivers. Most digital Joysticks tend to use the digital signals produced by Thrustmaster, or CH but the Gravis does not use either; it is therefore incompatible with both the Mayflash USB to Gameport Adapter, as well as the Manhattan USB to Gameport adapter. The only method which seems possible for adapting this joystick to modern operating systems is to disassemble and rewire it, a difficult and time consuming proposition.

RECOMMENDED ADAPTATION: Rewiring. Not compatible with USB to Gameport Adapters.

Gravis Eliminator
One of the efforts of Kensington to produce Joysticks under the Gravis name, this well recieved joystick boasted 8 buttons, POV, Throttle as well as twisting axis. Some of the DA15 versions of this joystick did come with a DA15 to USB adapter, but this part has proven rare and difficult to find. It is not known yet what set of signal-mixing commands it will respond to, if any. Anyone who has experience with this joystick is invited to use our forums to provide more information. At worse case, this could be a rewiring job.

RECOMMENDED ADAPTION: Rewiring. Not compatible with USB to Gameport Adapters.

Original Gravis Gamepad for the PC

The Gravis PC GamePad is a game portgame controller produced by Advanced Gravis Computer Technology first released in 1991. It was the first gamepad for the IBM PC compatible in a market then dominated by joysticks.[citation needed] Included with the gamepad was a sharewareCommander Keen game, episode 1, Marooned on Mars, which was later replaced with the shareware episode 4, Secret of the Oracle which supported all 4 buttons. The gamepad is no longer manufactured, as Gravis was acquired in 1997 by Kensington Computer Products Group.

Features[edit]

Tank

The gamepad's design is similar to that of the stock SNES controller (more so the Japanese and European version with colored buttons), although it lacks the Start, Select and shoulder buttons, and the shape of the controller's chassis differs slightly, with an inverted curve on the left side. As originally found in some versions of the Sega Master System controller, the center of the Gravis GamePad's d-pad allows a small joystick to be inserted. The resulting lever action provides increased directional sensitivity, desirable in fighting games for example.

Both at the top and bottom of the gamepad are switches. One of them removes the normal functionality from 2 of the buttons, and turns them into autofire variants of the first 2. This gave all four buttons functionality even in PC games that only supported two buttons on joysticks or for scenarios when two gamepads are connected with a Y-splitter. The other allows for left-handed operation by turning the workings of the D-pad and buttons upside down.

Variations[edit]

Later, two variations were made, called the GamePad Pro, and GamePad Pro USB, which resemble the original PlayStation Controller, with the addition of four shoulder buttons and the Select and Start buttons that were absent in the original. The GamePad Pro employed advanced signaling techniques (referred to as 'GrIP') to allow for both the use of ten buttons and the simultaneous use of up to four controllers connected by the controller's built-in piggyback plug. A switch on the pack of the non-USB pad could be used to allow the pad to function as a standard four-button pad; otherwise, games could not detect the gamepad unless they were coded with the device in mind (DOS) or a specific driver was installed (Windows). The latter uses the USB port and the USB Human Interface Device class standards, and is not intended for DOS use. Gravis launched other series of gamepads for the Mac, the Amiga, and Atari ST as well.

CD-i with wired controller on top

The Philips CD-i interactive multimedia CD player features a wired controller that is basically the original Gravis PC GamePad in a monochrome, grey color scheme. The Gravis logo is replaced with the Philips logo. There are only two button functions, and the switch at the bottom controls the cursor speed in menus.[citation needed]

Click on one application and click Enable. If the problem doesn't occur, repeat steps 3 and 4, closing the second application instead of the first. Games When you are unable to reproduce the problem, it is likely that the application you most recently closed is the cause and you should uninstall it from your system or disable it from starting up. Attempt to reproduce your problem. Continue repeating the process for each application until you have successfully solved your problem or checked each application.

One icon from the Nuvola icon set resembles the GamePad.The GamePad was also the official gamepad of Jazz Jackrabbit, as noted in the shareware demo version of the game. The gamepad appears in the game as a power-up, and as an advertisement in the background, which reads 'All kids love Gravis GamePad'.
